Strategic Objective

To advance environmentally sustainable development in New Zealand by improving best practice and levels of resource stewardship.

To establish strong leadership amongst Government, Regional and Territorial Authorities in respect of environmental practice.

Specific Projects

  • Opportunities for Distributed Generation in New Zealand (2003). A commentary examining the opportunities for using distributed generation in New Zealand.

  • Electricity Supply & Demand to 2015 (2002), now in its 6th edition, has been jointly published by CAE and Sinclair Knight Merz since 1992. It offers an analysis of our electricity generating capacity in a bid to consider how expected increased demands for electricity could be met through sustainable development in New Zealand.

  • Assessment of Environmental Effects: Information, Evaluation and Outcomes (2001), is based on presentations made at the Assessment of Environmental Effects Conference held in 1999. It contains practical advice on many of the important issues surrounding preparation of an adequate AEE. Currently, although an AEE is obligatory, there are few guidelines available to assist practitioners in their preparation. Problems arise because of the poor quality of many AEE’s, with applicants too often considering an AEE to be a burden rather than a necessary contribution towards quality assurance and sustainable development of New Zealand resources and environment.

  • Domestic Hot Water (2001), endeavours to bring together in one place the information and experience needed to provide good initial design and effective upgrades of existing domestic hot water supply systems.

  • Landfill Guidelines (2000), is a revised publication replacing Landfill Engineering Guidelines (1992) and outlines key issues and requirements with respect to the applicable legislation.

  • Management of Hazardous Waste (2000), complies specific information related to the management of hazardous waste in New Zealand, as well as providing more general information. It aims to assist the reader to form an understanding of the special requirements and care necessary when handling or dealing with this type of waste.

  • Energy Efficiency: A Guide to Current and Emerging Technologies (1996), is published in two volumes. Volume 1, Buildings and Transportation, considers energy efficiency in the areas of domestic and commercial buildings and transport. Volume 2, Industry and Primary Production, discusses energy efficiency in the context of primary production, food processing, forestry processing, manufacturing and minerals and general industrial technologies. Both these volumes are aimed at supporting sustainable development of New Zealand resources and environment.

  • New and Emerging Renewable Energy Opportunities (1996), is a report published jointly by CAE and EECA. The report looks at the opportunities using solar energy, biomass, water and wind for the sustainable development of energy within New Zealand.

  • The Environmentally Educated Engineer: Focus on Fundamentals (1995), addresses the issues involved in the education of environmentally concerned engineers. It is based on a three day international workshop held in 1994. The workshop’s aim was to develop a fundamental rationale and framework on which courses and qualifications for environmentally educated engineers should be based.

  • Reliability of Electricity Supply (1993). This publication is a project overview which looked at how reliable was New Zealand’s electricity supply at the time it was published.

  • Our Waste: Our Responsibility (1992), a major work on the sustainable development of waste management in New Zealand. This book has since become the pre-eminent reference text amongst waste management practitioners throughout New Zealand.
