The purpose of this Design Guide is to provide an introduction to fire engineering. It will be useful for those wishing to carry out or review specific fire engineering designs to meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code or the Building Code of Australia.

In 1994 the first edition of the Fire Engineering Design Guide (FEDG), edited by Andy Buchanan, was published as a result of findings of a study group following the introduction of the Building Act 1991. The Guide was reprinted in 1995 and 1996. In 2001 the second edition was released. It included updates on the information in the previous edition and new material to address documentation and peer review, domestic fire safety, design fires for computer modelling, new technology and data, and extended information on regulatory frameworks.
In 2008 the third edition has been edited by Michael Spearpoint. This edition has been completely revised and updated to reflect advances in fire engineering over the last seven years and includes new chapters on risk management and rural fire considerations.

The FEDG is more than just a reference text for fire engineers and those within the fire industry. It is also a useful tool for facilities managers and risk managers overseeing large property portfolios. The text has been developed to provide basic concepts and understanding on seventeen subjects within fire engineering and offers recommendations on sources for specialist extension material.

The content of the FEDG draws on the knowledge and experience of over twenty practitioners, researchers and others that work with fire and fire prevention in New Zealand and Australia.
