Navigating and Searching the CAE Site

Can't find something?

Information is grouped into six main areas: About CAE, and CAE's five programme areas (Ocean Resources, Infrastructure Systems, Risk Management, Sustainable Technologies and Emerging Technologies). All these can be accessed from the links at the top of each page.

Additionally, the CAE logo (top left-hand corner) has a drop-down menu relating to specific activities.

You can also find topics using the Drop-down Menus on the main page and below:

or by using the Site Map.

A text-based Quicklinks Menu appears on each main page to the right of the page text. This is only visible if your screen resolution is 800 x 600 or greater.

For a specific subject, enter a topic in the Search Box (shown at the top of each page) and click the arrow. (Note that the search box on the front page appears under 'Quicklinks'.)

I've been told a certain document has been added to the site, but I can't find it. Where is it?

All recently added or modified documents are listed under the headings "New & Updated" or "Special Items" on the front page of the site. Under the latter heading there is also an archive of earlier Special Items.

Still can't find what you want?

Contact CAE for more assistance.

Where are the links?

Links throughout the site appear in green (but are not underlined). When your mouse hovers over a link, the link will show it is active by turning blue.

How do I order a book?

Click on the Marketplace icon which appears at the top left of each page. Select the publication you want and follow the on-screen prompts.

For details of CAE books and reports see the Publications Page; for current pricing, see the Publication Price List page.

Viewing and Download Problems

The pages look scrambled, or the graphics are out of place

This occasionally occurs when browsing with Mozilla (and varients such as Firefox) - if the page is refreshed, the problem generally goes away.

Please note that older browsers (earlier than IE5 or equivalent) will not interpret these pages correctly. We recommend using the latest version of your preferred browser.

The site has been tested and should function with the latest versions of IE, Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, Safari, Opera and Camino under Windows 9.x, Windows XP, Mac OS9.x, Mac OSX and Linux (Red Hat and Mandrake).

I click on a download link and nothing happens, or my browser tells me it doesn't know what to do with the file

Virtually all downloads on this site are in pdf format. To open these you need the Adobe Acrobat Reader (available free from Adobe). If your browser is configured to do so, pdfs can be opened directly in a browser window. A copy can be saved on your hard drive by selecting File: Save.

If your browser is not configured to open pdfs, right-click on the file name (control click on a Mac) and select 'Download Link to Disk'.

A few files are saved as Word documents. Your browser may be configured to open these directly in a window; alternatively, download the file to your hard drive.

I can't open/read pdf files I've downloaded

To save space, most pdf files on this site have been reduced in size. As a consequence, files can only be opened in Acrobat Reader version 6 or better. We recommend always using the latest version for your platform.

To upgade Acrobat Reader (free download) go to the Acrobat website.

pdfs won't open/partially open in my browser

For a browser to open pdf files within a browser window, it needs to have the latest version of the pdf reader plugin installed (check the vendor site for your browser) and sufficient system resources to open the file correctly. If you are unsure, it is best to download a copy of the pdf to your local hard drive.
